It is minhag/custom to wait until a full year from death to erect a tombstone. At this time the, the family of the deceased will hold an “unveiling”, which usually includes another eulogy or speech remembering the deceased. The tomestone is covered with a white linen cloth which is removed during the ceremony.
The anniversary of a close relative’s death is called the yahrzeit, a Yiddush word whose literal meaning is “time of year.” This is a time when it is particularly praiseworthy for the family members to take an aliyah or say Kaddish in service. It is also traditional to light a memorial candle, which burns for twenty-four hours, in the home.
